My creative life is split between design and music.
Since the summer of 2015, singing in a ska-punk band has been a major part of life and has influenced my art and personal style.
I merged these two worlds with a complete branding project for my band: creating merchandise, a logo, printed material and an overall identity over the past two years.
Ska music and culture has a long history that spans many generations and “waves” of interest throughout the years. Beginning in 1950s Jamaica with a strong offbeat and jazz influence (a forerunner to reggae), the style was then adopted by 70s punk kids in England and the U.S. The third wave had its height in 90s California among a dark grunge scene, and it was a breath of fresh air.
Over the years, people have embraced ska as the genre of cultural unity, togetherness, and political protest. It’s loud, upbeat dance music that promotes positive change.
Influenced by 80s punk, the history of ska, and the spirit of cutting, pasting, and the xerox machine, I challenged myself to ask what a ska-punk band looks like in the year 2017. I wanted to embrace our digital world of today while celebrating the do-it-yourself mentality and radical positivity of ska-punk in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.
